Pastoral Support

At The Tynings Primary School, we are committed to providing a nurturing and supportive environment where every child feels valued, safe, and able to thrive. Our Pastoral Support system plays a central role in ensuring the well-being of all pupils, helping them to navigate challenges and build positive relationships within our school community.

Our Pastoral Approach

We understand that a child’s emotional and social well-being is key to their academic success and overall happiness. That’s why our pastoral support focuses on creating an inclusive environment where every child is supported holistically. Our approach includes:

  • Emotional Well-Being: We provide a range of activities and support systems to help children manage their emotions, build resilience, and develop a positive sense of self-worth.
  • Positive Relationships: Our school promotes respect, kindness, and empathy, encouraging pupils to build strong, positive relationships with their peers and staff.
  • Mental Health Awareness: We are proactive in supporting mental health, offering resources, guidance, and early intervention for children who may need additional emotional support.

Key Elements of Our Pastoral Support

  1. Designated Pastoral Team
    • Our pastoral team works closely with class teachers and parents to support pupils who may be experiencing emotional, social, or behavioral challenges. The team provides one-on-one sessions, group work, and targeted interventions to ensure every child feels heard and supported.
  2. Nurture Groups
    • For children who need extra support with social skills, emotional regulation, or self-esteem, we offer Nurture Groups. These small, focused sessions create a safe space for children to build confidence and develop the skills they need to thrive in a larger classroom setting.
  3. Mentoring and Buddy Systems
    • We operate a buddy system, pairing older pupils with younger children to help them settle into school life, develop friendships, and feel part of the school community. Our mentoring programs also offer additional guidance and support to pupils who may benefit from a more structured, ongoing relationship with a trusted adult.
  4. Safeguarding
    • Safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. Our staff are trained to identify and respond to any concerns regarding a child’s well-being. We work closely with external agencies to ensure that any child in need of protection or additional care receives the appropriate support.
  5. Parent Engagement
    • We believe that the partnership between home and school is vital in supporting a child’s well-being. We work closely with parents and carers, keeping them informed of any concerns and working together to provide the best outcomes for their child. We also offer guidance and resources for parents to support their child’s mental health and emotional development at home.

Additional Support Services

  • Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA): Our trained ELSA provides additional emotional and social support to pupils, helping them manage challenges such as anxiety, friendship issues, or loss.
  • Mental Health Resources: We provide access to resources and support for both pupils and parents, including mental health workshops and information on external counseling services.
  • Anti-Bullying Initiatives: We take a proactive stance on bullying, promoting kindness and respect throughout the school. Our anti-bullying initiatives and regular assemblies help to ensure that all pupils feel safe and included.
